Etymology: < classical Latin quirītātiōn-, quirītātiō action of crying out in protest publicly (Livy) < quirītāt- , past participial stem of quirītāre to cry out in protest (of disputed origin: see note) + -iō -ion suffix1.Classical Latin quirītāre was derived by ancient authors < Quirītēs Quirites n.; however, it is considered by modern scholars to be an imitative formation. Compare cry v.
Obsolete. rare (archaic in later use).
Complaint; lamentation; an instance of this.The use implied by quot. 1891 has not been traced in the works of Edward Harwood (1729–94).
