Etymology: < rag n.² + weed n.¹ In sense 2 so called on account of the ragged form of the leaves. The reason for use in sense 1 is unclear, as ‘ragged’ does not well describe the plant butcher's broom. T. Hunt ( Plant Names Medieval Eng. (1989) 56) has suggested that the gloss is erroneous. Compare earlier ragwort n.¹
