单词 bequest
释义

bequestn.

/bɪˈkwɛst/
Forms: Also Middle English biqueste, Middle English byquyste, Middle English bicquest, byqueste, 1500s bequeste, Middle English– bequest.
Etymology: Middle English biquyste , biqueste , probably for an earlier *bícwis , bí-cwiss(e , < bí- , accented form of bi- , be- prefix + cwis , cwiss(e ‘saying’ < Germanic *qissi-z < *qiþ-ti-z , < qiþan to say (compare Sievers Ags. Gram. §232). Bequest thus represents a type *ˈbiqissi-z answering to the verb *biˈqiþan , bequeath n. The later change is parallel to that of behest n., and the accentuation is assimilated to that of the verb.
1. The act of bequeathing; transference or bestowal by will, or by a similar procedure.
