Etymology: Partly < Anglo-Norman and Middle French, French rebellant (second half of the 14th cent. or earlier in Anglo-Norman; use as adjective of present participle of rebeller rebel v.; also as noun (14th cent.)), and partly < classical Latin rebellant-, rebellāns, present participle of rebellāre rebel v. Compare Italian ribellante, adjective and noun (1313).
