1. Any of various deep-bodied fishes of the sea bream family Sparidae, chiefly of warm coastal waters, typically silvery in colour, but sometimes having a blotched pattern, and important as food fishes; esp. (a) the scup, Stenotomus chrysops (cf. paugy n.); (b) the pinfish, Lagodon rhomboides; (c) (more fully red porgy) the fish Pagrus pagrus, which has a silvery red body with numerous small blue spots and is found in coastal areas of the western and eastern Atlantic and in the Mediterranean; (d) a fish of the genus Calamus, found in the tropical western Atlantic, the Caribbean, and the Gulf of Mexico.
