Compare requirer n.The sense ‘suitor, wooer’ is apparently unparalleled in French; however, compare Anglo-Norman and Middle French requerre in its specific sense ‘to ask for the hand of (a girl or woman) in marriage’ (12th cent. in Old French). In quot. 1812 probably after Dutch requirant (frequent in legal use).
