Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French responsion; Latin respōnsiōn-, respōnsiō.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman and Middle French responsion (French †responsion ) response (12th cent. in Old French), payment by a feudal tenant, especially one made annually by a knight in one of the military orders to that order (c1300) and its etymon classical Latin respōnsiōn-, respōnsiō action of answering a question, action of replying to an argument or charge, refutation, defence, in post-classical Latin also responsory (9th cent.), academic disputation (1215 with reference to the University of Paris; 1379, 1461, 1462 in British sources), annual payment to treasury of Hospitallers from revenue of preceptories (1313, 1501 in British sources) < respōns- , past participial stem of respondēre respond v. + -iō -ion suffix1.
