Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French restaurateur.
Etymology: < French restaurateur (1771 in sense 2 (compare slightly earlier restauratrice (1767)); 1798 in sense 1, although quots. 1782 and 1785 at sense 1 suggest earlier currency of the word in French in this sense), specific uses of restaurateur person who restores (14th cent. in Middle French in medical use in sense ‘assistant surgeon’) < classical Latin restaurātor restaurator n.With sense 2 compare later restauranter n., restauranteur n. N.E.D. (1908) gives the pronunciation as (ręstōratȫr) /rɛstɔratœr/.
