Etymology: < post-classical Latin rhabdomantia (1590 as rabdomantia , or earlier) < Byzantine Greek ῥαβδομαντεία (5th cent. as a Greek word in Jerome) < ancient Greek ῥαβδο- rhabdo- comb. form + Hellenistic Greek -μαντεία -mancy comb. form. Compare French rhabdomancie (1579 in Middle French as rhabdomantie).Less naturalized parallel borrowings rabdomanteia and rabdomantia are also occasionally attested; compare:1624 T. Heywood Γυναικεῖον 402 Rabdomanteia was vsed by a Physician of Tholosa, in speaking certaine mysticall words in a low and submisse voyce.1665 W. Drage Daimonomageia 13 That Magick that is called Rabdomantia, or Rod-magick.
