释义 | Protophytan. Botany. Now chiefly historical. With singular or plural agreement. A class of primitive plants or plantlike organisms regarded as forming the lowest division of the vegetable kingdom (corresponding to the Protozoa in the animal kingdom), spec. one comprising unicellular and other simple green algae. Also, with plural agreement (also protophyta): such plants and organisms collectively.In various early classifications the term also included multicellular algae, fungi, and lichens; in some more recent ones, it included slime moulds, blue-green algae, yeasts, bacteria, etc.Now little used as a formal taxonomic name.
