Etymology: Origin unknown.With the first element perhaps compare rid , Scots variant of red adj., although reed n.¹ has alternatively been suggested. Bird Names (1993) at reed lag n. and P. Acker in Medium Ævum 62 (1993) 285–8. The form ridlark in the 1675 edition of quot. 1596 apparently shows remodelling by association with lark n.¹
