Brit. /ˈrɔːˌfləːtə/, U.S. /ˈrɔrˌflʊdə/
Inflections: Plural Rohrflöten, Rohrflötes.
Forms:

Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Dutch. Partly a borrowing from German. Etymons: Dutch roerfluit; German Rohrflöte.
Etymology: In α. forms < Dutch roerfluit (1756 or earlier; < roer tube (see roer n.) + fluit flute n.1, after German Rohrflöte ). In β. forms < German Rohrflöte (1742 or earlier in form †Rohrflöten (intended as singular noun), denoting the organ stop; now more usually in sense ‘reed pipe, reed flute’ (late 18th cent. or earlier in this sense); < Rohr tube (see roer n.) + Flöte flute n.1). In γ. forms with substitution of flute n.1 for German Flöte. O.E.D. Suppl. (1982) gives the non-naturalized pronunciation (rō·rflȫtə) /ˈroːrfløːtə/. In plural form Rohrflöten after the German plural form.
