Origin: Either (i) from a proper name, combined with an English element. Or (ii) a borrowing from French. Etymons: rose n.1, proper name du Barry; French Rose du Barry.
Etymology: Either < rose n.1 + the name of the Comtesse du Barry (1743–93), mistress to Louis XV from the late 1760s and a patron of the Sèvres porcelain factory (see quot. 1863 at sense A., and compare quot. 1872 at rose Pompadour n.), or < French Rose du Barry (although this is apparently only attested later (1878 or earlier), and compare also quot. 1863 at sense A.; < rose rose n.1 + the name of the Comtesse du Barry ). Compare later rose Pompadour n.
