Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian romanaccio.
Etymology: < Italian romanaccio dialect spoken in Rome (1935 or earlier in regional (Rome) parlà romanaccio to speak Roman dialect; second half of the 19th cent. or earlier in sense ‘working-class inhabitant or native of Rome’, used humorously or pejoratively) < romano Roman n.1 + -accio , suffix forming nouns with pejorative connotations (see populace n.). Compare earlier Romanesco n. 2. O.E.D. Suppl. (1982) gives only the non-naturalized pronunciation (romanā·tʃio) /romaˈnattʃo/.
