Etymology: < the name of Dmitrij Leonidovič Romanovskij (1861–1921; also transliterated Romanofsky, Romanovski, Romanovskii, Romanowski, Romanowsky, etc.), Russian physician, who described the staining technique in St. Petersburger medicinische Wochenschrift 16, no. 34 (24 Aug. 1891) 299.In α. forms via German (the transliteration of Romanovskij's name with medial -w- follows specifically German conventions), although no similar compound denoting the technique appears to be attested in German until later; compare German Romanowsky-Verfahren (1904 or earlier), lit. ‘Romanowsky method’. Compare Russian metod Romanovskogo, sposob Romanovskogo (both 1902 in po metodu Romanovskago, po sposobu Romanovskago ‘according to Romanowsky's method’).
