Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: Latin rubia , -an suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin rubia madder (see rubiaceous adj.) + -an suffix, after German Rubian (E. Schunck 1848, in Ann. der Chem. u. Pharm. 66 176). Compare rubiacin n.
Chemistry. Now historical and rare.
A brownish-yellow resinous substance isolated from madder root, subsequently shown to consist of a mixture of glycosides of alizarin and other compounds.
