Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Latin Satanianus ; Satan n., -ian suffix.
Etymology: Partly (in sense A. 1 and in use as noun) < post-classical Latin Satanianus, noun (5th cent. in Augustine; usually in plural Sataniani) < Satan Satan n. + classical Latin -iānus -ian suffix, and partly (in sense A. 2) < its elements Satan n. + -ian suffix.Compare the following earlier examples of post-classical Latin Sataniani in an English context:1577 M. Hanmer Chronogr. 44 in Aunc. Eccl. Hist. Some of them thoughte that it was theyre duetie to worshippe the deuell, lest he shoulde hurte them, these were called Sataniani.1581 M.
