单词 schlock
释义

schlockn.adj.

Brit. /ʃlɒk/, U.S. /ʃlɑk/
Forms: 1900s– schlack, 1900s– schlag, 1900s– schlock, 1900s– shlock, 1900s– slock.
Origin: Probably a borrowing from Yiddish. Etymon: Yiddish *shlak.
Etymology: Probably < an unattested Yiddish form *shlak dross < German Schlacke dross (14th cent.) < Middle Low German slagge , in the same sense, probably ultimately < the same Germanic base as slay v.1The form schlag reflects alteration after Yiddish shlog hit, stroke (apparently < shlogn to strike: see slay v.1). Dictionaries of Yiddish record Yiddish shlak only in the senses ‘stroke, apoplexy’, (in extended use) ‘calamity, pest’; this word is probably < Middle High German slac stroke, hit (see slay n.1). A derivation of the English noun from this Yiddish noun seems unlikely on semantic grounds.
colloquial (originally U.S.).
A. n.
Cheap, shoddy, or inferior quality goods or material; junk, rubbish.Frequently with reference to the arts or entertainment.Recorded earliest in schlock store at Compounds 1a.Predicative uses (e.g. quot. 1963) may belong at B.
