Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: adjudicate v., -or suffix.
Etymology: < adjudicate v. + -or suffix. Compare post-classical Latin adjudicator (1539, a1609 in Scottish sources).In quot. 1705 after French †adjudicataire denoting a senior official in pre-revolutionary France whose task was to supervise the collection of taxes (1690 in this sense; 1560 in Middle French in sense ‘person to whom something is adjudged’); French adjudicateur ‘judge’ is not attested until much later (1823).
A person who or (occasionally) thing which adjudicates; a judge.
