Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin scintilla.
Etymology: < classical Latin scintilla particle of fire, spark, something small from which a bigger thing can grow, glittering speck; of unknown origin: the suffix may derive < the base of -illa -illa suffix. Compare earlier scintil n., and also scintillate v., scintillation n.
