Etymology: Alteration (with suffix substitution: see -or suffix) of adjurer n., probably chiefly after juror n.In quot. 1611 translating French †adjurateur person who swears solemnly (1611 in Cotgrave in this sense, in an isolated attestation; earlier in senses ‘exorcist’ (1380 in Middle French in an apparently isolated attestation, subsequently from 1836) and ‘person who makes another person swear an oath’ (1564 in Middle French; obsolete after 1675)).
