Etymology: < modern Latin seg(h)olātus, < Hebrew segōl, the name of the vowel-point ֶ and of the sound /ɛ/ which it represents. The name segōl means lit. ‘bunch of grapes’, alluding to the shape of the character.

Originally, of a disyllabic noun: Having the vowel segōl in both syllables. Now commonly in extended sense, as the distinctive epithet of the class of disyllabic nouns having an unaccented short vowel (normally segōl) in the last syllable.
