Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin sensu stricto.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin sensu stricto, lit. ‘in the restricted meaning’ (1676 or earlier) < classical Latin sensū , ablative of sensus sense n. + strictō , ablative masculine singular of strictus strict adj. Compare stricto sensu adv., and also sensu lato adv.Compare the following earlier example of post-classical Latin sensu strictiore ‘in a more restricted sense’ (1649 or earlier) in an English context:a1691 R. Baxter Reliquæ Baxterianæ (1696) i. ii. 420 It is agreed on by Casuists..That Oaths are to be taken sensu strictiore, and so are Laws, and those especially which determine of the Obligation of Oaths.
Strictly speaking; in the narrow sense (of a term, esp. in the natural sciences). Opposed to sensu lato adv. Cf. stricto sensu adv.
