单词 blakeberyed
释义

blakeberyedadj.

Forms: Middle English blakberied, Middle English blakburied, Middle English blakeberyed.
Origin: Apparently formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: blackberry n., -ed suffix2.
Etymology: Apparently < blackberry n. (see forms at that entry) + -ed suffix2, used (in phrase to go a blakeberyed ) as an equivalent of *blackberrying (compare much later blackberrying n., blackberry v.); compare similar constructions in Chaucer and his contemporaries, such as to go a begged (in same meaning as to go a begging ); for a possible explanation of how such constructions may have arisen, see discussion at begged adv.If this explanation is correct, the literal meaning of the phrase would thus be ‘to go blackberrying’, hence figuratively ‘to go astray’ (with a probable pun also on buried , past participle of bury v., in the context in quot. c1405).
Obsolete.
Probably: astray. Only in to go a blakeberyed (see discussion in etymology).
