Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French signacle; Latin signāculum.
Etymology: < (i) Anglo-Norman seignacle, Anglo-Norman and Middle French signacle, sinacle, synacle sign (c1100; originally and frequently with reference to the sign of the cross), seal (end of the 13th cent. or earlier), and its etymon (ii) classical Latin signāculum seal, in post-classical Latin also sign, mark (late 2nd cent. in Tertullian with reference to circumcision, early 3rd cent. in Tertullian with reference to the sign of the cross) < signāre sign v.1 + -culum -cle suffix. Compare Old Occitan senhagol, senhatgle sign of the cross (c1280), Catalan signacle seal, mark (15th cent.), Italian segnacolo sign (a1321 as †signaculo; also †signacolo).
