Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Simpson.
Etymology: < the name of Thomas Simpson (1710–61), English mathematician, who proposed the rule in 1743 ( Math. Dissertations 109).
attributive and in the genitive. Mathematics. Designating either of two rules associated with Thomas Simpson for estimating the definite integral of a curve by using arcs specified by quadratic or cubic equations to approximate subdivisions of the curve. Simpson's 1/3 rule n. the rule that if n is an even number and x0, x1,...,xn are equally spaced points, then an approximation to the integral of the function f( x ) between x0 and xn is given by xnx0/ 3n(f(x0) + 4f(x1) + 2f(x2)+ 4f(x3) + 2f(x4) + ⋯ + 4f(xn−1) + f(xn)). Simpson's 3/8 rule n. the rule that if n is divisible by three, then an approximation to the integral of f (x) between x0 and xn is given by 3(xnx0)/ 8n(f(x0) + 3f(x1) + 3f(x2)+2f(x3) + 3f(x4) + 3f(x5) + 2f(x6) +⋯+ f(xn)).Simpson's rule is typically used to refer to Simpson's 1/3 rule.Simpson's rules are often used in ship building and in estimating the stability of ships, in which context they are often called Simpson's first rule and Simpson's second rule.
