Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin sonāre , -ation suffix; Latin sonation-, sonatio.
Etymology: Either < classical Latin sonāre to sound (see sound v.1) + -ation suffix, or < post-classical Latin sonation-, sonatio (13th cent. in Albertus Magnus; 14th cent. in British sources) < classical Latin sonāt- , past participial stem of sonāre to sound + -iō -ion suffix1.
