Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French bonification.
Etymology: < French bonification improvement (1584 in Middle French), payment of a bonus (1712) < bonifier bonify v. + -ation -ation suffix (see -fication suffix). Compare slightly later bonify v. 2.Compare post-classical Latin bonificatio benefit, blessing (14th cent. in a British source). With some later uses, especially with reference to the reclamation of land, compare also Italian bonificazione (1688).
