1896 A. H. Chester Dict. Names Minerals 257 Stevensite... This name was suggested in 1873, at a meeting of the N.Y. Lyceum of Natural History, but not published, though soon after used on labels.
1916 Amer. Mineralogist 1 44 In the old Hartshorn quarry, in Springfield Township, Essex County, New Jersey, Mr. Louis Reamer..discovered a single vein of a peculiar mineral, called by the quarrymen ‘magnesium’ (= talc?)... It proved to be essentially identical with the hitherto imperfectly known stevensite.
1962 W. A. Deer et al. Rock-forming Minerals III. 231 Brindley (1955) described stevensite as a talc-saponite interlayered mineral, whereas Faust and Murata (1953) and Faust et al. (1959) regard it as a smectite with a defect structure in which a small proportion of layers with the ‘attributes of talc’ play only a minor role.
1979 Sci. Amer. Apr. 81/2 A good example is the alkaline chemical sedimentation that deposits limestones, cherts, phosphates and magnesium-based clay minerals, including attapulgites, sepiolites and stevensites.
