Etymology: < acet- (in acetic adj.) + aldehyde n. (see aldehyde n. 2), after German Acetaldehyd (1860 or earlier; compare Acetylaldehyd , in the same sense (1855 or earlier)). Compare earlier aldehyde n. 1.The substance was originally isolated by C. W. Scheele in 1774 and was named (in German) Aldehyd by J. Liebig in 1835 (compare aldehyde n. 1). Acetaldehyde was a more precise name developed after further aldehydes were discovered; compare quot. 1857.

Chemistry.

A colourless, flammable liquid with a fruity odour, formed by the partial oxidation of ethanol and used as an intermediate in chemical synthesis, esp. in the production of acetic acid. Also called ethanal.Acetaldehyde is the aldehyde of acetic acid. Formula: CH₃CHO.
