释义

Sunderlandn.

Brit. /ˈsʌndələnd/, U.S. /ˈsəndərlənd/
Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Sunderland.
Etymology: < Sunderland, the name of a city and metropolitan borough on the River Wear, north-east England, which was a centre for the production of earthenware in the 18th and 19th centuries. The name of the settlement (formerly in County Durham, now Tyne and Wear) is first recorded c1168, and reflects Old English sundorland detached estate, land set aside for a particular purpose (compare quot. OE2 at sunder adj. 1); compare also Sunderland, Cumberland (1278 as Sonderland).
1. attributive. Designating any of various styles of typically coarse earthenware produced in Sunderland, chiefly in the 19th cent., and items made from them; esp. designating a type of cream-coloured ware, made in Sunderland in the late 18th and 19th centuries, and decorated with a brightly coloured, typically pink, lustre and transfers; (also) designating products from elsewhere resembling this in style. Chiefly in Sunderland ware, Sunderland lustreware, Sunderland jug.A distinction was sometimes drawn between the decorated pink ware, known as Sunderland lustreware, and a plainer, brown type, known as Sunderland ware (see quots. 19111, 19112). More recently, the latter term has also come to refer typically to the pink lustreware. In quot. 1805, probably referring to earthenware bottles, but the lack of context makes it impossible to be certain.
