单词 swansong
释义

swansongn.

Brit. /ˈswɒnsɒŋ/, U.S. /ˈswɑnˌsɔŋ/, /ˈswɑnˌsɑŋ/
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: swan n., song n.1
Etymology: < swan n. + song n.1, with reference to the belief that swans sing before they die.The idea that swans sing before they die goes back to ancient Greece (compare e.g. Aeschylus Agamemon 1444ff., Plato Phaedo 84e, Aristotle Historia Animalium 615b) and is a literary motif in Greek and Latin authors (e.g. Aelian De Natura Animalium 2. 32, Plutarch Moralia 615b, Cicero Tusculan Disputations 1. 73, Ovid: see below). Compare classical Latin carmina cycnorum, plural (Ovid Metamorphoses 5. 387), post-classical Latin cycni cantum (5th cent.), and Hellenistic Greek τὸ κύκνειον ᾁδειν to sing a swan's song, where τὸ κύκνειον represents a use as noun of the neuter of κύκνειος, adjective, perhaps short for τὸ κύκνειον ἆσμα or τὸ κύκνειον μέλος swan's song. Already in Aeschylus the comparison is made with the last utterance of a person, in this case the prophetess Cassandra. Parallels are found in many other European languages. Compare e.g. German Schwanengesang (1561 denoting the song of a swan before it dies, 1702 or earlier denoting a last work), †Schwansang, denoting the song of a swan before it dies (1420 as swan stang, transmission error for *swan sang), Schwanenlied (1702 or earlier, and 1693 or earlier as †Schwanlied, denoting a last work), French chant du cygne (1656 denoting a last work; already 1546 in Middle French as chant du cycne, denoting the song of a swan before it dies).
A song like that traditionally believed to be sung by a swan that is about to die; the last work of a musician, poet, writer, etc., typically composed shortly before death; (later more generally) any final performance, action, or effort.
