Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Botulismus.
Etymology: < German Botulismus (1855 or earlier) < classical Latin botulus sausage, probably borrowed from Oscan (perhaps < the same Indo-European base as Gothic qiþus stomach) + German -ismus -ism suffix. Compare earlier botulinic adj.With reference to poisoning from imperfectly preserved sausages or other meat as a major cause of the disease; compare quot. 1858.
Medicine.
The potentially fatal disease caused by a toxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum (see botulinum n. 3), characterized by muscle weakness and paralysis, typically beginning in the muscles of the face and progressing downwards to the rest of the body.In humans, botulism is usually a type of food poisoning, acquired by the consumption of imperfectly preserved meat or vegetables containing botulinum toxin. It can also be caused by infection of a wound with C. botulinum, or by overgrowth of the bacterium in the gut. The disease also occurs in wild and domestic animals, typically after the consumption of decaying food.
