Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin terra, Latin nūllius, nūllus.
Etymology: < classical Latin terra terra n. + nūllius, genitive of nūllus no one (see nullus n.). Compare post-classical Latin terra nullius (17th cent. or earlier).
International Law.
Land that is legally unoccupied or uninhabited. In Australia the question of whether British colonizers had regarded the continent as terra nullius at the time of the original settlement, and, if so, whether this was a proper designation, was at the centre of several important legal cases in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, chief among them Mabo v Queensland.
