Geology. A lattice-like structure of thin blades of a mineral, typically calcite, deposited in cracks in limestone or other rock, and occurring in caves, mineral deposits, etc.

1892 Evening Argus-Leader (Sioux Falls, S. Dakota) 23 Aug. 3/1 The first feature we find is the deepest boxwork of all colors and varieties found in this cave [sc. Wind Cave], being about 15 feet in depth.
1941 Sci. Monthly Sept. 223/1 The boxwork consists of fin-like projections of calcite which hang from the ceiling in a sort of honeycomb pattern.
1996 Beautiful Brit. Columbia Fall 13/3 People of all ages can handle these caves. Watch for formations of box-work, a honeycomb-like structure made of fragile calcite plates.
