Forms: see throat n. and wort n.1
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: throat n., wort n.1
Etymology: < throat n. + wort n.1, with allusion to the use of this plant in remedies for throat complaints (compare quot. 1597 at sense 1). Compare Dutch halscruid (1554 as †halscruyt), German Halskraut (1542).
1. Originally: any of various bellflowers (genus Campanula) used medicinally in the treatment of diseases of the throat, esp. the nettle-leaved bellflower, C. trachelium, and the giant bellflower, C. latifolia (now chiefly historical). In later use also: any plant of the genus Trachelium (family Campanulaceae), the members of which are native to the Mediterranean region and have small, tubular, blue, mauve, or white flowers typically borne in umbels or corymbs; esp. T. caeruleum. Frequently with distinguishing word. Now rare. Some of these campanulas have also been called Canterbury bells.
