单词 tinger
释义

tingern.1

Origin: Apparently formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: an element of uncertain origin, -er suffix1.
Etymology: < an element of uncertain origin (see note) + -er suffix1. Compare unting v., untinger n. at unting v. Derivatives. The first element is evidently the same verb as reflected by unting v. and untinger n. at unting v. Derivatives. It seems probable that it is also related to English regional (south-western) ting to tie, bind, fasten together, (noun) anything used to tie with, strap or girth which fastens a pannier to the saddle (18th and 19th centuries; see Eng. Dial. Dict. at ting v.3 and sb.3, which indicates that they were pronounced /tɪŋ/). It has been suggested that the first element descends from an Old English cognate of Old Icelandic tengja to make fast, fasten, tie together < the same Germanic base as tǫng tongs n. + a suffix forming verbs and causing i-mutation. However, the Old English cognate is not attested in a relevant sense, but instead shows a different semantic development of the base: tengan to press (towards), to hasten, to hurry (weak verb Class I; also in prefixed forms in the same sense). The expected outcome of this verb in modern English would be tinge /tɪndʒ/ (compare singe v.). It is alternatively possible that the first element could reflect a borrowing of the cognate verb from early Scandinavian. This seems particularly attractive in the case of the modern regional word, given the very close correspondence in meaning; however, the regional distribution of all of the English evidence argues somewhat against this (the sole evidence for this word, and for tinger n.1, untinger n., and unting v. is all from a single passage, in which they are indicated as local words used in Kent).
Obsolete. rare.
A workman employed in raising and fastening the body of a cart after it has been emptied by tipping. Cf. unting v.
