Etymology: Probably < toll n.1 (compare sense 2a(b) at that entry) + boat n.1 (compare sense 3a at that entry, and compare English regional use denoting a tub for meal or meat, a meal-boat: see Eng. Dial. Dict.).Compare post-classical Latin tollbolla bowl of ale exacted as toll (13th cent. in a British source), apparently < an unattested Middle English compound < toll n.1 + bowl n.1 Sense 1 could instead be showing a transmission error for tovet n. (compare quot. 1527 at that entry).
