Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French urbanité; Latin urbānitāt-, urbānitās.
Etymology: Originally < Middle French urbanité (French urbanité ) courtesy, civility (1454; earlier in sense ‘social relations between inhabitants of a town’ (c1370)) and its etymon classical Latin urbānitāt-, urbānitās qualities typical of a city-dweller, sophistication, polish, refined politeness, suavity, condition of living in a city (esp. Rome), refinement or polish or style, elegance or smartness of humour, wit < urbānus urban adj. + -tās (see -ty suffix1; compare -ity suffix). Compare Italian urbanità (a1543; 14th cent. as †urbanitade ), Spanish urbanidad (a1440; 1385 as †urbanitad ), Portuguese urbanidade (1619). In sense 3 (which is not paralleled in French before the 20th cent.) probably partly after urbane adj. and urban adj.
