Etymology: Ultimately < Italian valuta commercial or market value of a commodity (mid 13th cent.), value of a coin or bill of credit (14th cent.), foreign currency as an acceptable medium of exchange (mid 18th cent.; see value n.), use as noun of feminine past participle of valere to be worth < classical Latin valēre to be worth (see valent adj.), perhaps partly via one or more of the languages into which the Italian word has been borrowed: compare German Valuta legal currency in a particular country (1610; mid 16th cent. in sense ‘monetary value, price’), Dutch valuta value of a bill of exchange (1669), legal currency in a particular country (especially in an international context), monetary unit (1840), Danish valuta money, monetary value (early 18th cent.; also early 18th cent. in sense ‘excellence, merit’), Russian valjuta monetary unit, monetary standard, monetary value (19th cent.; 1729 or earlier in sense ‘settlement of a bill’), foreign currency (1923 or earlier).In plural form valute after the Italian plural form; in plural form valuten probably after the German plural form.
