Origin: A borrowing from Dutch. Etymon: Dutch bommerij.
Etymology: < Dutch bommerij (1573), variant of bodmerij action of pledging a ship, its cargo, etc. in return for money lent (see bottomry n.). Compare earlier bottomry n.Compare the following slightly earlier instance of the Latinized form bomaria in an English linguistic context:1659 Particular Advice from Foreign Parts 25 Nov.–2 Dec. 494 Of Monies to be taken up, or delivered on Botto-maria, commonly called Bomaria.
