单词 whitten
释义

whittenn.

Brit. /ˈwɪtn/, U.S. /ˈ(h)wɪt(ə)n/
Forms:

α. Old English hwiting, Middle English whityng, 1600s whiting, 1600s whitting.

β. 1500s–1600s (1800s– English regional (midlands and southern)) whitten, 1800s– witten.

Origin: Apparently formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: white adj., -ing suffix3.
Etymology: Apparently < white adj. + -ing suffix3. With sense 1c compare whicken , variant of quicken n.1, and also whitty n. Compare whiting n.2The meaning of the post-classical Latin lemma rendered in quot. OE at sense 1a is unknown and its source has not been traced. The Old English word has sometimes been assumed to refer to whitebeam ( Sorbus aria: see whitebeam n.) or viburnum (compare sense 1b), but there is no available evidence to support these identifications. Compare also Middle English whitel-tre (c1400; apparently in isolated use), also in uncertain sense. In β. forms apparently with reduction of the ending.
1. In full whitten-tree.
a. A tree perhaps having white leaves or flowers (not identified). Obsolete. rare. For a discussion of the meaning of the word in quot. OE see note in etymology.
