A pan or vat into which a liquor is run off to ‘settle’ or deposit a sediment. In Metallurgy (see quot. 1881).
Dyeing. The third or lowest vat used in the manufacture of indigo dye, in which the indigo solids settle out. Cf. settler, n. 4. Now historical.
