immunoassay

Immunoassay

An assay that quantifies antigen or antibody by immunochemical means. The antigen can be a relatively simple substance such as a drug, or a complex one such as a protein or a virus. See Antibody, Antigen

The reactants are first mixed so that a varying quantity of one (A) is added to a constant amount of the other (B). The formation of an immune (antigen-antibody) complex is measured as a function of the varied reactant (A). The result is represented by a “standard curve” for reactant A. An unknown sample is tested by adding it to reactant B. The extent of the measured change is referred to the standard curve, and thereby is obtained the amount of reactant A which produces a comparable change. The amount is represented as the content of reactant A in the unknown sample. See Immunofluorescence, Immunology, Radioimmunoassay

immunoassay

[‚im·yə·nō′a‚sāy] (immunology) A laboratory detection method that uses antibodies to react with specific substances.

immunoassay

immunoassay

[im″u-no-as´a] any of several methods for the quantitative determination of chemical substances, such as hormones, drugs, and specific proteins, that utilize the highly specific binding between an antigen or hapten and homologous antibodies, including radioimmunoassay, enzyme immunoassay, and fluoroimmunoassay.

im·mu·no·as·say

(im'yū-nō-as'ā, im-yū'nō), Detection and assay of substances by serologic (immunologic) methods; in most applications the substance in question serves as antigen, both in antibody production and in measurement of antibody by the test substance.

immunoassay

Lab medicine Any assay that measures an antigen-antibody response, the sensitivity of which varies according to the method; an immunologic test that quantifies a particular antigen using a cognate antibody. See ELISA, RIA.

immunoassay

A method of testing for, and measuring the concentration of, various antibodies. Various methods, including RADIOIMMUNOASSAY, enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and immunoelectrophoresis may be used.
