Iavorskii, Vasilii Ivanovich

 

Born Dec. 29, 1875 (Jan. 10, 1876), in Kamenets-Podol’skii; died Sept. 20, 1974, in Leningrad. Soviet geologist. Honored Worker in Science and Technology of the RSFSR(1962). Hero of Socialist Labor (1971).

Iavorskii graduated from the mining school in Dombrowa. After graduating from the St. Petersburg Institute of Mines in 1913, he worked at the Geological Committee (later the All-Union Geological Research Institute). His principal works were devoted to the geology of coal deposits and to paleontology. Iavorskii was one of the leading investigators of the Kuznetsk Coal Basin.

Iavorskii received the State Prize of the USSR in 1946. He was also awarded three Orders of Lenin, two other orders, and various medals.
