Guinea Highlands
Guinea Highlands
a mountainous region in West Africa stretching parallel to the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Guinea from the sources of the Niger, Sénégal, and Gambia rivers in the west to the lower course of the Niger in the east. It consists of mountains and upland plains that are projections of the African platform. Elevations in the eastern part range between 300 and 500 m. In the west the Fouta Djallon Mountains and the Leone-Liberian Upland have elevations of 500 to 1,000 m and higher; the summit of Mount Bintimani (1,948 m) is the highest point. The southern windward slopes of the Guinea Highlands are steeper, cut deeply by many rivers, and covered primarily with evergreen rain forests and forests of hardwood and evergreen trees. Deciduous savanna forests and high-grass savannas predominate on the drier northern slopes.
