Gunib

a plateau in Inner Dagestan (Dagestan ASSR), situated between the lower reaches of the Avarskoe Koisu and Karakoisu rivers, west of the settlement of Gunib. Elevations to 2,354 m. The upper parts of the plateau are composed of layers of limestone, whose sheer cliffs give the plateau the character of a natural fortress. Gunib has a large number of sunny days each year (up to 310) and an absence of winds. In the settlement of Gunib there is a mountain climatic health resort and a tourist center.

The aul (village) of Gunib served as the last refuge for Shamil in his struggle against tsarism. It was there that he and 400 Murids surrendered to the Russian troops on Aug. 25, 1859.
