Basargin, Nikolai Vasil’evich

 

Born 1799, in Vladimir Province; died Feb. 3 (15), 1861, in Moscow. Decembrist. Lieutenant. Basargin was a member of the Tul’chin section of the Union of Welfare (a secret Decembrist society) and then of the Southern Society. He belonged to the moderate wing of the Decembrists. He was sentenced to 20 years at hard labor, but the sentence was reduced to ten years. Since 1835 he was in exile in Tobol’sk Province. Basargin left memoirs and historical and publicistic works.
