A term of art used in the UK for a junior doctor nearing the end of his or her specialist training period in which he or she fills the role of a consultant with permission of his seniors and the Regional Advisor.
Acting up consultant
• Up to three months may be included towards an individual’s Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) programme
• Period must be approved prospectively with Regional Adviser and take place in the same postgraduate deanery.
• Period must be relevant to the CCT programme.
• Period must be in the final year of a CCT programme—i.e., a programme consisting of two years of general professional training and multiple years of higher specialist training.
• Trainee must be on loan or acting up from his or her SpR post.
• Trainee must retain his or her SpR contract and NTN.
• Appropriate level of supervision must be arranged with a named educational supervisor to whom the trainee can turn for advice and assistance if needed.
• Educational supervisor must submit a report to the Regional Adviser at the end of the period. If the 3-month period is at the end of the final year of the training programme, a recommendation for the award of a CCT will not be made until the report from the educational supervisor has been received at the College office.
