Kal’gin, Anatolii Nikolaevich

Born Apr. 20 (May 2), 1875, in Vladikavkaz (present-day Ordzhonikidze); died Mar. 27, 1943, in Tbilisi. Soviet architect.

Kal’gin graduated from the Institute of Civil Engineering in St. Petersburg in 1900. From 1907 he lived in Georgia. He taught at the Tbilisi Academy of Arts from 1922 to 1930. A combining of modern basic structural elements with classical and traditional Georgian forms and decorative motifs is characteristic of his buildings. He created the building of the Georgian Land Bank of the Nobility (present-day Karl Marx Library of the Georgian SSR) in Tbilisi (1912–16) and the V. I. Lenin Zemo-Avchaly Hydroelectric Power Plant (1927, with K. A. Leont’ev and M. S. Machavariani).
